BLACK CREEK : Get to Know Us

Next to theology, I give to music the highest place and honor. Music is the art of the prophets; the only art that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us. ~ Martin Luther

GROUP PROFILE

Members: Craig Allen: guitar, banjo, dobro, vocals;  Scott Johnson: mandolin, guitar, vocals; Tracie Rhodes Johnson: acoustic bass, vocals; Danny Allen:  sound engineer.

Influences:  The Rochesters; The Isaacs; Doyle Lawson; Ricky Skaggs, and others.

Venues:  The BLACK CREEK members have played many different venues together in the last six years, including Fishers of Men Fishing Tournaments; Church functions, such as revivals, homecomings, youth rallies, camp meetings, and missions events; Civic Clubs, such as Ruritan and Lions; Festivals, such as Acorn, Oaktoberfest, Sweet Potato, and Farmers; Music Halls, Theatres, and General Stores; and, Private Engagements, such as benefits, birthdays, fundraisers, dinners, and reunions. We've had the honor of playing with Roby Huffman & the Bluegrass Cutups, Jeff & Sheri Easter, The Singing Perrys, and others, but the greatest honor of all is playing for our Lord Jesus Christ. We go wherever He opens a door.

In the Genes: BLACK CREEK is sort of a family. Craig and Danny are brothers.  Scott and Tracie are married.  All four of them are brothers and sister in Christ. All have musical leaves on their family trees. Craig and Danny have another brother, Ricky, who is an accomplished guitarist/vocalist. Danny is also part of another southern gospel group, One Way, with his wife, Teresa. Scott's father, Linwood, has been a choir director for years, as well as sings southern gospel music with his family. Scott's mother, Miriam, has family that is musically-talented with many instruments. Tracie's family has always been musical, and her brother, Timmy, sings southern gospel music with his family.

Not Quitting the Day Jobs: Craig drives trucks for the Food Lion Corporation; Danny is a captain with the Johnston County Sheriff's Department; Scott is the parts manager for Johns Hiester Chrysler Dodge Jeep; and Tracie is a personnel technician with the North Carolina Department of Correction.

In the Beginning: The current group found it's beginnings in another group, Jordan's Journey. In the spring of 2000, Craig, who was a fresh convert, began playing/singing at church. Scott and Tracie became intrigued with the type of music he played, and joined in a couple of Sundays to sing with Craig. Another church member, Cabot Barbour, joined in on the bass guitar. Craig began playing at area retirement facilities. Scott, Tracie, and Cabot voiced an interest in tagging along one day. And the bug bit. Skyler and Julie Smith also worked with BLACK CREEK in 2008 while Scott and Tracie took a break.

Oddest Engagement: The West Virginia Mission Trip, for sure. We packed up, had a convoy with us from our home church bearing supplies for the flood victims and support for us, and started driving.  The closer we got, the narrower the roads got, until finally, we turned off onto a small, wooded path called, "Devil's Fork Road," (how unnerving!) that led way down into what the community folks called "the holler."  It was probably 90+ degrees that day as we played on the back of a flatbed trailer - so hot, that Craig's Martin guitar cracked down the middle! (Where's the nearest hospital - for Craig AND the guitar?)  The Lord used the folks that came for supplies and assistance to touch our hearts in an awesome way, and we were able to send news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ echoing into those hills, to those who couldn't come.

What's in a Name: The name BLACK CREEK evolved from the members' common geography (and Craig's wife, Jenny!). We all live next door to one another on a tributary of BLACK CREEK, which is a topographical feature that defines the rural area we call "home."

Favorite Song: Has to be "Heaven's Door," a song with which we close every date, written and arranged by singer/songwriter Gary Duty at Sound Doctrine Music, which gives a straight ahead outline of the reason Jesus came, and that's our mission.

And We're Different Because: Of our strong conviction to carry the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world.  We want folks to hear the Message, not the music; the Savior, not the sound. We long to see the lost come into the fold; God help us to never neglect the work of carrying the Gospel and to see the lost as God sees the lost.

TESTIMONY:  I was raised in Benson Grove Baptist Church. All my young life, my brother, Ricky, witnessed to me, trying to show me the way to JESUS. During my adult life, many times I drove by the church wondering what people found so intriguing there. Then, in 1998, the Lord showed me mightily what was drawing them ... His Spirit.  He drew me to Himself, saved me out of hell, changed my priorities in life, and made me a brand new creature.  His gift to me at that time was salvation and the talent for music, which I have since used to try to show others the way to new life in JESUS. Since then, I have been completely satisfied in my salvation, and God has blessed my family abundantly. Life has never been so rewarding, and I have never once regretted committing my life to JESUS.

DUTIES HELD/HOLD IN CHURCH:  Electronics Team, Pianist, Choir Member.

TESTIMONY:  I was raised in Benson Grove Baptist Church as a young child. In 1997, as I was attending a Spirit-filled youth rally in Tennessee, the Lord reached down and saved me by His marvelous grace. Shortly thereafter, I began attending Benson Grove Baptist Church on a regular basis, and became actively involved there, serving on the Electronics Team, singing in the choir, and playing the piano. I now sing bass with ONE WAY and accompany my wife as she serves the Lord in her ministry, in addition to engineering sound with BLACK CREEK. Since the Lord saved me, He has filled me to overflowing, He has met all my needs, ministered love and grace to me in every situation, and used me in many ways. My relationship with Him only gets sweeter as the days go by.

FUNNY:   They tell me I rock back and forth on my heels and sway side to side when I sing... and often, I get so carried away introducing the next song, I rabbit-track and forget which song I was actually introducing in the first place!

HOME CHURCH:  Benson Grove Baptist Church

DUTIES HELD/HOLD IN CHURCH:  Sound Technician with E-Team, Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, Bulletins and Marquee, Asst. Play Director, VBS Teacher.

TESTIMONY:  I was raised in a church where my parents were very dedicated and active members and attended church camp every year. I was given a good foundation; however, when I went off to college in 1989, and got out into the "world," I began to question my faith. In 1997, I visited what is now my home church on Friend Day with my father, who was the choir director. During the next few months, the Lord revealed to me my condition one night during a service, as I was sitting on the back row. I was saved, baptized, and the Lord blessed me with talents that I began to use with the church as a sound tech. It wasn't very long, He put me together with Craig, where I've tried to use the musical talents with which He blessed me ever since.

HOME CHURCH:  Benson Grove Baptist Church

DUTIES HELD/HOLD IN CHURCH:  Bassist, Pianist, Sunday School Teacher, Bulletins & Marquee, Children's Choir Director, Play Director, VBS Teacher, Nursery Director.

TESTIMONY:  I was raised in Benson Grove Baptist Church and saved in 1981 when I was 12 years old, on a day I had wanted to stay home with my Daddy, who was unchurched. It was the most awesome experience of my life, truly. I got away from the Lord when I was 16 and went my own way, did my own thing. I only called on the Lord in times of need or distress. But the Lord got my attention at 26 when He blessed me with a beautiful baby boy. I rededicated my life to serve the Lord, and raise my son under His nurture and admonition. I've done my best, but when I fall, I go back to that stake in the road in 1981, and remember who I am. He's never left me, and has blessed me and my family more than I deserve. I am most unworthy to be used in His name, yet He has chosen to do so anyway. What an awesome calling.
